PXLPIC was a valiant attempt, made in 1992 and 1993, to create a
device- and DVI-driver-indpendent system for insterting monochrome
bitmap pictures into teX documents without using gigantic
picture-container fonts which might exceed the capacity of DVI
drivers or output devices.

An advantage of the proposed system is that, providing that the
required set of fonts is present, any DVI-driver can display inserted
pictures no matter whether it recognizes certain \special-s.

A disadvantage is that, for bitmap images of any significant size,
one needs BigTeX compilation, or else "TeX capacity exceeded" message
may appear.

Both the source and compiled fonts are attached, as well as a
picture-insertion macro and a sample LaTeX showing an insertion of a
single picture. The same picture is also attached as a .PCX file.
SxConv utility can be used to convert pictures into teX format.

This rather old stuff has been taken out of a backup and tidied-up a
little (translated into english, etc.) for publication.
